For most Westerners, the day begins with a drink of either tea or coffee and it is a real treat if this is made by a family member and brought to them in bed. In the dialogue, David takes a cup of tea up to the bedroom for his wife, Mary, and greets her, “Morning, darling!” before asking, “Did you sleep well?” These are customary morning greetings for family members.

Phrase in Focus: Put it this Way…
Put it this way + clause is usually used to imply or make an understatement about something. British people, who like satire or “black comedy”, like to use this kind of structure. In the dialogue, Mary comments to her husband that he must have slept badly.
